Alonso's Wins 70 Pounds of Old Bay

The Roland Park restaurant was named "most innovative" in the seasoning's Baytriotism competition.

Alonso’s won a spicy award for its creative use of Baltimore’s favorite seasoning.

On Wednesday, the Roland Park restaurant was awarded with 70 pounds of Old Bay for being named the "most innovative" as part of the seasoning’s "Taste of Baytriotism" competition.

"We thought Alonso’s had the most creative and innovative use of Old Bay this summer," said Laurie Harrsen, a spokeswoman for the company who presented the award.

Alonso’s was one of more than 30 area restaurants that participated in the competition in June. The restaurant won on the strength of its Old Bay inspired menu that included peach crab cakes, bacon wrapped oysters with Old Bay butter and sherry and Old Bay chicken Chesapeake, which was put together by Executive Chef Sebastien Trossbach.

But what put the menu—which was judged by Old Bay employees and former Baltimore Sun food writer Rob Kasper—over the top was the use of the seasoning with a dark chocolate ice cream.

"I got the impression they wanted people to push the envelope a little bit with Old Bay," Trossbach said.
