Brick Sidewalks Among Changes Proposed For Greemount Corridor
The Department of Transportation will meet with community members about the project Wednesday evening.

Brick sidewalks and intersections could be coming to York Road and Greenmount Avenue.
Residents will have the chance to speak with Department of Transportation officials on Wednesday about the proposed streetscape project along Greenmount Avenue and York Road.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at the Waverly branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, 400 E. 33rdSt.
According to an email from Adrienne Barnes, a department spokeswoman, the proposed improvements include:
- Brick sidewalks
- Neighborhood corridor signs
- Fully bricked intersections
- Decorative crosswalks
- Improved landscaping
- Street amenities like benches and bike racks
- Stormwater management

You could pave the streets with gold in this city and it still wouldn't be enough to turn it around. If they Mayor would show even half the passion for fighting crime and grime as she did for the Ravens winning the Super Bowl, we might have a fighting chance. As it stands now, Baltimore is in deeper trouble than we were when she took office, in my opinion.

Brick sidewalks in Baltimore are a stupid idea. The freeze-thaw cycle is frequent enough here that they are constantly heaving up, which requires maintenance that is not in the budget and that the city does not provide. Then they become a tripping hazard. If you don't believe me go look at the brick sidewalks along MLK Boulevard near UMB. When they finally got so bad that something needed to be done, the city patched them with asphalt. Lovely.

Bricks? Bricks? Our city is stating that they are going bankrupt (which we don't know since we don't actually audit our books) and the Dept. of Transportation is talking about laying fresh brick sidewalks in an area that has been trouble for all of North Baltimore. Is this going to fix the gang war...no. Spend the money on prisons, cops, and cutting taxes and pave Greenmount Avenue in mud.

I attended this meeting and was impressed by the thoughtful presentation and interest in citizen concerns. Of course, execution is where it counts.
My only disappointment was that since this was solely concerned with the north-south axis, adjacent E. 33rd St. issues were outside the scope of the planning.
