The Baltimore City Council is scheduled to take a closer look at plans for running recreation centers—including finding private partners to run many of the buildings.

The council’s Recreation and Parks Subcommittee will hold a hearing at 5 p.m., Nov. 2 at City Hall.

The hearing was announced during the council’s meeting on Monday after Councilman Bill Henry, D-District 4, introduced the resolution asking for the hearing.

“If one thing [I hope] comes out of this is that we find out some level of partnership other than somebody else is going to take full responsibility for the centers,” Henry said.

The city placed a request for proposal from private organizations to run many of its recreation centers. A request for proposal is the process governments often go through when seeking private vendors.

But only seven organizations responded to the request for proposal and now the city is in danger of having to close many of its recreation centers because of budget constraints.
