Last year Loyola University Maryland conducted a survey called Loyola’s Listening to help gauge what the school could do to help improve the York Road corridor.

On resident's wish list was the availability of fresher food.

“One of the primary projects residents wanted was a farmers’ market,” said Erin O’Keffe, director of Loyola’s York Road Initiative.

As a result, the university has helped put together the Govanstowne Farmers Market that will run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday at 5104 York Road in the parking lot of the Baltimore City Public Safety and Transportation Headquarters.

The market was organized with community input and with help from students, faculty and staff at Loyola.

The market is a pilot program that will run for the next four weeks. After that, the university will assess what works and what does not, O’Keefe said.

The market will feature a variety of vendors offering fresh fruit, produce and meat among other items.

Karen DeCamp, president of the York Road Partnership, said the market will bring something more than just food to the corridor. She said it will put feet on the street and help build community.

“It’s bringing something new, something exciting, something fresh to a part of the York Road corridor that's kind of dry,” DeCamp said.
