Hampden Sports Bar Goes Beyond Standard Fare

David's 1st and 10 Sports Bar will has its hard opening on Tuesday.

Starting Tuesday there’s a new spot to watch the game and grab a banh mi in Hampden.

David's 1st & 10 Sports Bar, at 3626 Falls Road, has 35 televisions that range between 40 inches and 80 inches in size and can show up to about 20 sporting events at one time, but will feature a menu that will feature some "eclectic" choices, "well-executed" classic cocktails and even good wine.

"To me it’s more about options, and not making things so narrow and sort of dumbed down for people. It’s a sports bar, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat like jalapeño poppers… and just drink Bud Light, or whatever," said general manager David Carelton, a former employee of Hampden wine bar 13.5.

He said that although there are some places in the area that serve as a place where residents can go and watch a game, that David’s 1st and 10 Sports Bar is filling a need for a dedicated place where sports fans may be able to go watch sports such as soccer or lacrosse.

"There’s a lot of bars that function as the place to watch the game but aren’t necessarily quite dedicated sports bars. And you might not get to watch the thing you want to watch, you’ve got to watch what everybody’s watching," Carelton said.

David Morgan, the bar’s owner, said he has been thinking about pursuing a sports bar for the past 15 to 20 years, but it wasn’t until his wife died that he began to transform what was David’s Restaurant and Deli and a former hobby shop, as a way to help him cope with his grief.

"I was mourning and I couldn’t get over what was happening to me because of the death of my wife and [my children] suggested to me that I do something with the restaurant to do something to occupy me," Morgan said.

Morgan, 72, a boxing and golf fan, said he has spent about $300,000 in getting the bar off the ground, but said his expectation is to create a place where residents of the neighborhood he was born and raised in can catch a game, have a cold beer and a good sandwich.

"I think it’s going to be one hell of a sports bar. I think it’s going to be a welcoming site for the neighborhood to have a place where you can watch various sports at one time," Morgan said.
