Condolences to the Victims of the Miserable Murderer in Aurora, Colorado

As just one contributor to the Red Maryland blog, I would like to express my condolences to the victims and their loved ones and friends in Aurora, Colorado.
The sad truth regarding the human condition is that there will periodically be evil agents who perpetrate unspeakable actions against randomly and non-randomly selected victims.
There is always a prurient search for the motives of the murderer(s), but except for curiosity regarding political motives which can lead us to apprehend any co-conspirators, we should have little curiosity regarding "why" such cowards wreaked horror on innocent people. Such speculation never, to my knowledge, has been of material value in stopping such actions; in fact, there is evidence that publicity for those who commit such acts motivates others to do the same to gain attention to their cause or themselves.
God bless those innocent victims, and let the full might of justice be wreaked on the killer(s).

Sure we may never know the motives, but doesn't mean our laws should be lax enough to allow it to happen. The only other places in the world besides the United States where these types of incidents happen on a regular basis are in countries involved in bloody civil wars and such. Mass killigs are as American as apple pie.

Oh Sean, I guess the killings of 77 people in Norway last year by one person or the Madrid rail bombings in 2004 or the London railway bombings in 2005 don't count. There are nuts all over the world.

Condolences mean little. Why doesn't Mr. Vatz join the call for tougher gun laws? We need to prevent another massacre, and expressing sorry to the victm's families is hollow. We all must do something to stop the gun violence. Nut cases don't kill! Automatic weapons do.

Wrong, Max. Nut cases will kill with whatever is available to them. If some of those in that theater had legally carried guns, they may have stopped this nut sooner. These people don't walk into police stations and begin shooting because they know the cops will shoot back. Gun laws only keep law abiding citizens from protecting themselves. But, of course, this is an old argument.

I don't want to impugn Dr. Vatz's motives or his sincerity, but I will say that I've noticed many on the right calling for a time of prayer and sympathy for the victims and their families. They say it is not time to debate gun control. What they are trying to do is squash any debate until the crime is off the front pages and the NRA lobbyists can quietly go back to work influencing our elected officials. But, as one CNN talk show host said, the time to debate gun control was the day before this incident happened.
