Sustainability Starts at Home

Blue Water Baltimore is a nonprofit watershed group dedicated to restoring and protecting local waterways. Now is a great time to think about our waterways, as the weather is warmer and we are more likely to visit our neighborhood parks and streams. As you enjoy the spring flowers and chirping birds, keep in mind that everything you do, including the infrastructure you utilize and the building in which you live, impacts your stream. And of course that stream is connected to the larger ecosystem, including the Chesapeake Bay.

One of your major impacts is stormwater, also known as urban runoff. This is the water that flows over hard surfaces such as roads and rooftops, and sometimes lawns. In our area, this water is sent directly to the streams without being treated.

There are things you can do to take better care of your streams, and what better time to get started than Earth Week? Blue Water Baltimore provides free and discounted advice, services, and products to help you on your way. Check out the Water Audit Program on our website to learn more. We’ll get you on your way to becoming a more eco-friendly resident through changes to your home that will protect the environment for generations to come.
