Violence Visits Council President's Doorsteps/Media Ignores

Saturday saw six people shot, and one person fatally stabbed in Baltimore. Among the shooting victims was a 7 year old child, whose condition is still unknown.

The child was shot Saturday night while playing outside, and was one of three victims shot at the same location on the 1200 block of E. Eager St (see Baltimore Spectator for complete report).

Shocked and disgusted residents stood outside watching as medics worked on their neighbors. Among the concerned residents, was City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young. Young actually heard the gunfire from inside his home.

In a city filled with daily violence, it's quite rare that the violence takes place within earshot of a city council member. Despite this being reported via Twitter, and then via The Baltimore Spectator blog, a half day later, all the mainstream accounts of the incident, sparse as they are, conveniently omit this.

It's as if it's no big thing. Personally, I think it is, and ought to be reported as part of the story. We'll see how the mainstream does as the story is updated and more information becomes available.

This further underscores the continued importance for more than just the mainstream voice covering the news. To get a complete picture of things going on, if you depend only on the big guys, you'll often be at a big loss.
