Mount Washington Residents Deal with Power Outages

BGE is working to restore power after 680,000 customers statewide lost electricity.

(UPDATED 5:40 p.m.) — Christian Wisner-Carlson, 20, sat on the porch of his home in the 2600 block of Carterdale Road Monday afternoon. He was wearing headphones and working on his laptop powered by an extension cord run across the street from a neighbor’s house.

Wisner-Carlson said he has been without power since he woke up on Sunday morning, and because he runs web servers from his home, the power outage is becoming a bit of a problem.“I run a lot of computers so it’s becoming a major headache,” Wisner-Carlson said

Wisner-Carlson was one of many Mount Washington residents still coping with power loss in the wake of Hurricane Irene.

Harriet Gold, who has lived in her home in the 2200 block of Smith Avenue for 51 years, said she has been without power since 4 a.m. Sunday.

“It’s very inconvenient. I’m spoiled,” Gold joked.

She said she is making do without television, air conditioning or being able to read, but that she hoped power would be restored by Monday afternoon.

Gold said her neighbors have been checking in on her and that everyone has tried to help one another through the outages.

“Everyone’s been very pleasant,” she said.

Norma Iglehart, of the 2600 block of Carterdale Road, said her family was prepared and has been using a generator to power the house since Sunday morning. She said her husband has even loaned their spare generator to three neighbors to allow them to take turns keeping their refrigerators cool.

“All the neighbors kind of look out for each other,” Iglehart said.
