Patch Readers Sound Off on Neighborhood Issues

We asked our readers what the biggest problems were in their neighborhoods, and here is what they told us.

Section 8 housing, pure and simple. I live in Hamilton and the neighborhood has changed for the worse since these people moved in no ifs, ands or buts.

I live in the beautiful SW Baltimore neighborhood of 'Ten Hills.' My biggest concerns are: burglaries, bad streets (desperately need re-paving) and trash everywhere! Our representative Helen Holten is useless (not to mention that she has also been brought up on ethics charges more than once).

3 things get to me, the rats, the crime, and the illegals. I live in Charles village.

I live in southern Charles Village, and I think our biggest problems are illegal dumping, vacant housing (mostly south of 25th St.), and a lack of business around 25th st. This problem might be solved with more development in Station North/Goucher.

Grime (trash not stored in cans with tight fitting lids; rats) is the only major issue facing Violetville (Southwest Baltimore). Other issues are a city government that does not respond to our grime issue (or the grime issue throughout Baltimore City). High property taxes are also an issue. Crime is always an issue, but, thank goodness, Violetville is still not seriously impacted by violent crime - yet!

I like Sean's "grime" term so I'll co-opt it into my assesment of Better Waverly. Grime can be a problem here at a couple of trouble spots. I'd like it if the police who "patrolled" Greenmount could get do more than just sit in their cars with the lights on, like actually - gasp! - get out of their cars and walk around? Adam it might be worth finding out why their orders seem to be just to sit parked with the lights on, just what the message is they're trying to send, and if any of the brass understands how this looks for the neighborhood.

Also hoping that the bail bonds business on 32nd does not open and is replaced by something more useful to the community.

Crosswalks (and enforcement) at Old York Rd and 32nd is a must-do.

Local jobs in my neighborhood.

I live in Pigtown, and we have the same problems -- Section 8 is a big one...and crime/drugs/grime. Only section 8 renters would pay 1500 a month to live here.

The business strip of buildings just south of Kentucky Avenue in the 3500 block of Harford Road need business that will stay put and not constantly move in and out. Also the convenience store on the corner of Kentucky Avenue and Harford Road needs to upgrade and expand their inventory and not just cater to the lottery players
