Baltimore Brings the Heat, Musically

This week brings a slew of hot shows to Baltimore.

Baltimore in July is hot in more than just the literal way. True, it is days on end of 100 degrees weather with 80 percent humidity. But it’s also hot in the figurative sense, because this week Baltimore is white hot with things to do, places to be, people to see, and summer nights to be filled with some great live bands.

This Friday, the Wind Up Space houses the last of the shows that were scheduled for the Hexagon before the venue's demise. A trio of Baltimore bands—Red Sammy, Sal Bando, and Soon Clyde—will be performing.

Saturday night I plan on being at the Ottobar for Rad Bromance. It is exactly what it sounds like, folks: an all-dude Lady Gaga cover band. I’ll give you a moment to re-read that last sentence and visualize what exactly that might be. And if you’re picturing in your head anything close to what I’m picturing in mine—well, let’s just say I’ll pay the $10 cover and see you there at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Carnivores, Bake Sale and Weekends will perform at 10 p.m. on Wednesday at Golden West in Hampden. The cover charge is $5.

Carnivores, a four-piece from Atlanta featuring several classically trained band members, combines the punk sensibilities of no limits experimentalism with the lo-fi harmonies of garage rock.

Don’t miss Bake Sale, the all-girl garage pop band from Memphis bringing the sounds of the dirty south spiked with garage pop. Repping Baltimore is Weekends, a two-piece garage/noise art rock band on local art rock label Friends Records.

Also from Atlanta, and also worth your time, are the Black Lips, playing the Ottobar Thursday. Melding punk with the decidedly southern music genres of country, rock and blues with some doo-wop thrown in, the Black Lips play with The Breaks and Night Beats. Doors are at 8 p.m., and tickets are $12.

  • Monday at Golden West: Paperhead, D. Watusi, and Needle Gun. 10 p.m., $5 cover.
  • Wednesday at CCAS: To All My Dear Friends (Florida two-piece post-rock), Time Columns (loop musicians, Maryland) and Questioner (Baltimore post metal), 7 p.m., donation.
