Check Out Great Live Entertainment Venues in North Baltimore this Weekend

A few of North Baltimore's best show spots keep you busy all weekend long.

Like many of you I have been feeling the post holidays economic crunch, but North Baltimore has kept me steadily entertained even on my modest budget. This weekend will be no exception.

Throughout the weekend you can take a mini tour of some of this part of the city's best live music and performance venues and still have enough for a Boh or two once you’ve paid to get in.

The Hexagon Space, located on Charles Street between North Avenue and Trenton Street, will feature Blevin Blectum, Despair, Despair, Despair, RandyRage and Peekaboo and Liveshitbingepurge at 8 p.m. Friday.

The venue features a wide variety of music. Anything from a distortion heavy noise band to one man playing six instruments have performed there.

The Hexagon has gone through many name changes and exchanged ownership several times over the years. This BYOB only spot has charm and has a rare feature, an open space where you can actually talk to your friends.

Across North Avenue from The Hexagon is the Wind Up Space. At 10 p.m. on Saturday the Sticky Buns Burlesque Show presents Infernoland.

Infernoland is the first scripted production put on by the troupe. It features Paco Fish, Roma Mafia, Marla Meringue, Gigi Holliday and Shortstaxx. I’m as curious as you are and there’s only one way to satisfy that curiosity. Be there with $13 in hand. One caveat is that you have to be 21-years-old to attend.

Rounding out the weekend Golden West Café, 1105 W. 36th Street in Hampden is featuring a show with We Read Minds, Only Thieves and The Dirty Names at 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The cafe primarily serves as a restaurant but once night falls, the tables are shoved out of the way and chairs stacked high in the corners it becomes one of the best places to see live bands in Baltimore since the old Talking Head closed.

When Golden West began having regular shows not only was it was a surprise, but it was also a bit of a struggle. However after hiring manager Brigette Lisbon the cafe has hit its stride as a music venue.

Bands play on a small riser for a stage that holds two tables during serving hours, and you are guaranteed an intimate encounter with some of the our best local and touring bands.

In the back of the venue runs the main bar with a small space at the very end for a table or two, and satellite bars are also opened for large capacity shows.

Here are some other things going on this weekend at some of the above featured venues as well:

  • Friday, at 9 p.m., The Wind Up Space presents Black Lodge Karaoke.
  • Saturday at 10 p.m., Golden West Café features Songwriter Sessions with Adam Trice, Sine Jensen, Sea Couch and Cameron Blake. They will be recording these live sessions, so your post holiday cough could be a part of musical history.
