Quirky film director John Waters, 68, of Baltimore decided to embark on an adventure he could write about. His new book, Carsick, chronicles his life on the road -- literally -- as he hitchhiked across the country from his home in Baltimore to his apartment in San Francisco.

WABE 90.1 FM notes that Waters is no stranger to perverse scenarios in his films; he intentionally creates them, including Pink Flamingos, a competition for the title of “the filthiest person alive.”

The first part of Carsick is fictional -- Waters imagines all the best and worst case scenarios that could happen has he hitchhikes. In his interview with National Public Radio, Waters highlights what it was like to be recognized by people, how he always kept his luggage with him, accepting rides out of desperation, and other adventures.

Seems to be the new thing. Most of the news stations (radio and TV) seem to prefer using the present tense while reporting on things that happened in the past. Drives me nuts. By the way, isn't hitchhiking dangerous, and illegal in most places? Why is it cute when someone famous does it?
