Senator Announces First New Release for Reopening

The theater will run the Paul Greengrass film 'Captain Phillips' starring Tom Hanks starting Oct. 11.

The Senator Theatre is nearly ready for its close-up.

On Wednesday, the theater's management announced "Captain Phillips" as the first first-run feature of its reopening, starting on Oct. 11.

The film, directed by Paul Greengrass, stars Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama, an American ship hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. Watch a trailer for the film here.

The Senator has been closed since April 2012 for renovations that included adding several new screens to the building and restoring the theater's rotunda. Pictures of the renovation's progress have been posted on the theater's Facebook page.

Last August, Baltimore City sold the theater to operators James "Buzz" Cusack and Kathleen Cusack Lyon.

The theater will host a reopening party on Oct. 10 featuring a screening of the 1988 John Waters film "Hairspray." Yes, the original, with Divine, Ricki Lake and Sonny Bono.
