Bike Police Battle Burglars

The Northern District police have deployed officers on bikes to help quell burglaries in locales where crime is becoming a problem.

During a recent meeting of the Northern District Community Council, Maj. Sabrina Tapp-Harper told residents she has deployed officers on bikes in neighborhoods where burglaries are an issue.

She said the officers on bikes have most recently been deployed in the Hampden and Remington neighborhoods.

Tapp-Harper said the strategy worked well combating break-ins in the Northwest District, where she most recently served as the deputy major.

But why do police on bikes work so well combating burglaries?

"Officers on bikes are much more mobile than officers working out of a patrol car, which can be beneficial when patrolling suburban areas as well as condensed residential neighborhoods. Bikes are also better to get in and around alleyways, and narrow thoroughfares," police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi wrote in an e-mail.
