Senator Brick Color Draws Objections

Detractors of the Senator Theatre's current operators question materials proposed for outer renovations of the building.

Even selecting the color of the brick used for the rehab of the Senator Theatre can draw protests.

On Tuesday, the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation voted to allow developers to use “golden rod” brick for the planned renovations of the historic art deco movie theater. But the commission added the caveat that it makes an on site visit within next two month to review the work.

But critics of the proposed redevelopment sent emails and letters critical of the proposal that were read on to the record. to read some of the letters.

Currently James “Buzz” Cusack and his daughter Kathleen Lyon, the theater’s operators, intend to add three more screens and restore the interior of the building.

The renovation of the building, which was built in 1939, is expected to cost $3 million. On April 25, the theater so renovations on the building can begin, and is expected to remain closed for six to nine months.
