Heat Can't Halt Govanstowne Farmers' Market

Although temperatures were in the high 90s, vendors still kept busy.

Despite temperatures rising into the high 90s on Wednesday, vendors at the soldiered on.

Organizers said about 239 customers came to the 5100 block of York Road, by about 6 p.m., to shop at the market, now in its second season. But the heat, which in Central Maryland, took one vendor off his feet, literally.

"I’ve never sat, this is probably the first time I’ve sat at a farmers’ market," said Nick Michaels, market manager for The Zahradka Farm in Middle River, as he sought shade under his stand’s tent.

The high heat is expected to continue through today, but a cool front is forecast to sweep through the area on Friday, bringing cooler temperatures and possibly some thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

Michaels said, despite the heat, the market had a pretty good turnout, and that he stayed busy through about 5:30 p.m. that evening.

He joked that he wasn’t looking forward to August, then thought about it, and said the dog days of summer may not be so warm after all, considering the strange weather so far this year.

"This weather in unbelievable. I’ve already got corn," Michaels said.

Terri Russell, owner of , was working at one of the two carts her business brings to six farmers’ markets, primarily in the Prince George’s County area.

Her stand, which features ice cream and Italian ice made with local ingredients, such as cantaloupe from Zharadka, was still doing business about a half hour before 7 p.m., when the market closes.

She said there wasn’t too much that could be done to beat the heat.

"Staying cool, enjoying delicious homemade ice cream, we’re in the business of cooling people off," Russell said.

The Govanstowne Farmers' Market is held 3 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday through Aug. 8.
