Mt. Washington Tavern Owners Hope for Fall Reopening

The owners of the are hoping to reopen their business by late fall or early winter and have released a sketch of what the rebuilt restaurant will look like.

Framing work at the restaurant is nearly complete and the plumbers and electricians are getting ready to start in the building, according to a press release announcing the intended timeline to reopen the tavern.

A multi-alarm blaze that erupted in the early morning hours of Oct. 31 last year almost totally destroyed the popular restaurant. Total damages were estimated at about $2.5 million.

Walter Schamu and his team at SMG Architects as well as Jim Macko of Kodiak Construction are leading the rebuilding team. Each has worked on major projects in Baltimore including the Bromo Seltzer Tower, the Hippodrome Performing Arts Center and the Clipper City Brewery Company, according to the news release.

As part of the rebuilding process, and a fundraiser for , the tavern is offering the chance to purchase commemorative bricks. Anyone may purchase a brick, which will be installed along the brick entrance of the rebuilt tavern, for $75.   

The owners hope to raise $30,000 for the hospital by selling the bricks, according to the news release.
