Radio Shack Closing 500 Stores, According to Report

Funny turn from '80s branding on Sunday followed by Wall Street Journal report of big cuts in storefronts Tuesday.

By Greg Hambrick

Radio Shack's poked fun at its antiquated branding in a Super Bowl ad Sunday. The well-received ad has been followed with plans to close 500 Radio Shack stores, according to the Wall Street Journal, potentially impacting our area locations.

There are roughly 4,300 Radio Shack stores. The Journal did not have a list of the closing sites.

Asked about the report of stores closing, a Radio Shack spokesperson told USA Today that the company wouldn't comment on "rumor or speculation."

The Wall Street Journal notes the impacted locations could be closed within months.
