Seawall Celebrates Union Mill Grand Opening

More Baltimore City school teachers will enjoy new accomadations in Hampden. 

On Thursday elected officials, business owners and residents gathered at Union Mill to celebrate the grand opening of the mixed use development.

Union Mill, once the largest stone mill in Maryland, is located in the shadow of Interstate 83 next to the Pepsi plant on Union Avenue. The development includes 56 apartments for city school teachers as well as 30,000 square feet of office space for nonprofits.

City school teachers receive $400 to $600 a month off their rent, and the apartments feature amenties such as an on site fitness center, a resource center with copy machines and a cafe, according to Union Mill's website.  

The project's developer, Seawall Development, is responsible for Miller's Court in Remington, another project that involved renovating an old building into apartments for educators and nonprofit office space.

Gov. Martin O'Malley spoke at the opening and praised it as the kind of the deveopment the city needs. He said the redevelopment of Baltimore will be the "salvation" of the state's environment by drawing more people back to urban areas and preventing further sprawl.
