Senator Gets State Tax Credits

After being denied the credits last year, the historic theater will receive $300,000 from the state.

After being last year, the Senator Theatre made the cut to receive $300,000 in state tax credits this year.

James “Buzz” Cusack and his daughter Kathleen Cusack, the theater’s current operators, three additional theaters in the building as well as a wine bar. 

However, the stewardship of the theater has recently been called into question. A group called Friends of the Senator recently started an protesting what the group says is the poor condition the theater.

At the time Patch wrote about the petition, James “Buzz” Cusack said the building was in rough shape when they took it over, but that they were delaying some maintenance because they were awaiting state funds to begin the rehab of the building.

In August, the Board of Estimates approved to the theater’s operators for capital improvements to the art deco theater that was built in 1939.

The Senator isn’t the only property to receive tax credits in North Baltimore.

The Mount Vernon Mill No. 1 on Falls Road, which is being redeveloped into restaurant spaces, 42,000 square feet of offices and 92 housing units, is also receiving $2.41 million in state tax credits, according to a news release.

Terra Nova Ventures, which is run by David Tufaro, a Roland Park resident and former Republican mayoral candidate, will renovate the Mill that was founded in 1873.
