Baltimore Celebrates National Night Out

Baltimore Celebrates National Night Out

Dear Baltimoreans,

The "29th Annual National Night Out," a unique crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, took place Tuesday, August 7. I made several stops around Baltimore and was thrilled to see our communities unifying to celebrate this great initiative.

I spent time with residents at events hosted by the New Park Heights Community Development Coalition, Washington Hill Mutual Homes, and Bayview Community Association. Thank you to every Baltimorean who participated and showed that they are doing their part to prevent crime in our great city.

Last year, more than 37 million people participated in National Night Out. The annual event is is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits our communities derive from National Night Out will most certainly extend well beyond one night.
