Civil Rights Icon Joins Push to Stop Youth Jail

Dear Baltimoreans,

On Thursday, November 8, Civil Rights Icon Rev. Jesse Jackson will join youth advocates, community members and local leaders for a citywide rally calling for funds slated to build a youth jail in Baltimore City to be reallocated to positive services for city youth.

The rally is being organized by the Safe and Sound Campaign and will be held outside, in front of City Hall at the War Memorial Plaza from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The rally will address the state’s plan to build a youth jail in spite of research that identifies alternative methods that are more effective and less costly. The Safe and Sound Campaign, following months of meetings and conversations with the Office of Governor Martin O’Malley, is advocating the reallocation of nearly $100 million in funding for the jail be redirected toward a broader, more comprehensive plan that promotes youth success by investing in alternatives to detention, like apprenticeships, jobs and recreational opportunities.
