Council President Calls for General Assembly Special Session
The more than $500 million in cuts would negatively impact Maryland's counties and result in significant reductions to vital services in Baltimore City.
City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young will introduce a resolution encouraging state leaders to convene a special session of the Maryland General Assembly in order to prevent deep cuts to important social programs slated to take effect July 1 as a result of the recently passed “Doomsday Budget.”
The more than $500 million in cuts would negatively impact Maryland’s counties and result in significant reductions to vital services in Baltimore City, including layoffs of police officers and prosecutors and the reduction of much-needed funding for public schools.
“Maryland, and Baltimore in particular, has experienced tremendous progress in reducing crime and improving public education,” City Council President Young said. “Now is not the time to turn away from our commitment to funding these core priorities that have greatly benefited residents of Baltimore City and Maryland’s counties.”

Council President Young’s resolution will be introduced tonight during the City Council’s regularly scheduled meeting.
