Councilmembers Encourage Residents to Apply for Soon-to-Expire Homeownership Tax Credits

Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke (District 14), Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and members of the Baltimore City Council will hold a press conference Monday at 4 p.m. to call attention to the fact that 25,000 eligible homeowners have failed to apply for continued Homestead Tax Credit benefits. 

Eligible homeowners who fail to apply by the December 31, 2012 deadline will lose the credit for the tax year beginning July 1, 2013. The average annual benefit to city homeowners is $1,060 in property tax savings, according to the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT.) 

The Maryland General Assembly required that all Maryland homeowners complete a one-time application in order to continue receiving the state’s Homestead Tax Credit. This action was taken to “weed out” people illegally claiming investment properties or second homes as eligible for the credit.

The tax benefit helps homeowners afford annual property tax increases on their owner-occupied homes and avoids drastic spikes in individual tax bills.

Go to this website: http://sdatcert3.resiusa.org/rp_rewrite/ (the State Department of Assessments and Taxation real estate databse). Then use the pull down menu to specify BALTIMORE CITY or your county, and click on Street Address. On the next screen, put in your address (and leave out words like Street, Avenue, North, South, etc.). After you click, you will get a page showing your property and its assessment. At the bottom of the page, it will tell you whether you have filed the form to get the homestead tax credit. If not, follow the instructions in the article to get the form to file.

Mine says it was approved 09/28/2010. Take it I'm fine, or does this have to be updated yearly?

This is a one time check to catch people who should not get the credit (for example, a married couple should not be getting the credit for more than one property). You do not need to update it.
