Senator Theatre Approved for $700,000 Loan from Spending Board
The loan is expected to cover capital improvements to the theater.
Baltimore's spending board has approved a loan of $700,000 to Senator Theatre, LLC for capital improvements to the historic cinema.
The improvements include replacing seats, carpet, wall coverings, curtains and a wall painting in the theater, according to the Board of Estimates agenda.
The Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation approved the renovations, which include adding three theaters and a wine bar, during its meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the board's agenda, the renovations will cost $2.15 million. The Senator Theatre, LLC is contributing $400,000 in equity and applying for $450,000 in federal and state tax credits. It's also seeking a $500,000 state loan and a $100,000 state Community Legacy Grant.
Senator Theatre, LLC is composed of James "Buzz" Cusack and his daughter Kathleen Cusack. The Cusacks, who own the Charles Theatre, have operated the Senator since 2010 after leasing the building from the city.
