Union Mill Historic Landmark Hearing Set

Union Mill, the Hampden mixed-use development, could soon be added to the city’s historic landmark list.

A bill to add Union Mill, formerly known as Druid Mill, is set for a hearing before the City Council’s Urban Affairs and Aging Committee scheduled for 4 p.m. at City Hall.

If the committee approves the bill it would still have to be passed by the City Council as a whole, and signed by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

The development celebrated it’s official opening about a year ago, and is located near the Pepsi plant under Interstate 83, and was once the largest stone mill in the state.

Keeping with Seawall Development's socially conscious mission, the development provides 56 apartments for public school teachers in addition to 30,000 square feet of office space for nonprofits.

School teachers renting an apartment receive a $400 to $600 a month discount, and the building features onsite amenities such as a resource center with a copy machine and also is home to Artifact Coffee, according to Union Mill website. The development is very similar to the company’s Miller’s Court development in Remington.

Gov. Martin O’Malley was the keynote speaker during Union Mill’s grand opening, where he praised it as part of the "salvation" of the state’s environment by pulling residents into urban areas and helping to prevent suburban sprawl.
