Weather Could Delay Charles Street Construction Start

The long awaited reconstruction of North Charles Street between 29th Street and University Parkway is scheduled to begin tomorrow, but weather may delay the start further.

But that start date was always depending on the weather cooperating.

Adrienne Barnes, a Department of Transportation spokeswoman, wrote in an email that rain could delay the start.

"…the weather is still in question if we manage to avoid rain it will take place," Barnes wrote.

But the forecast looks like it could be problematic.

The National Weather Service is calling for showers and thunderstorms throughout the day today. Their forecast also is predicting that showers will be "likely" on Wednesday with a chance of thunderstorms likely between 2 and 4 p.m. 

The construction, once it begins, is expected to last for 750 days and will result in the North Charles Street between University Parkway and 29th Street being closed for much of that time.

The $28 million project calls for North Charles Street between 25th and 29th streets be milled and repaved and a complete reconstruction of the road, median and sidewalk between 29th Street and University Parkway.
