Mizeur Makes EMILY's List

The political action committee announced its support of Del. Heather Mizeur on Friday.

EMILY’s List is backing Del. Heather Mizeur in her bid to become the first woman and openly gay person to serve as Maryland’s governor.

EMILY’s list, an influential political action committee that supports female Democratic candidates who are pro-abortion rights, announced on Friday it had added Mizeur to its “list.”

"Heather Mizeur is a progressive powerhouse who will fight for the rights of Maryland's women and working families from day one,” Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List, said in a news release. “Heather is poised to be the first elected openly gay governor in the country and the first woman to serve as governor in The Free State. The EMILY’s List community—now three million members strong—is excited about this glass-ceiling breaker.”

Although a poll this fall showed Mizuer with the lowest name recognition of any candidate in either party, she has garnered more attention in recent weeks because of her proposal to legalize marijuana in the state and use the revenue to fund pre-kindergarten. The proposal earned her an appearance on the cable news network MSNBC earlier this week.

She also announced earlier this month that she will be the first gubernatorial candidate to opt into Maryland’s public campaign finance system in nearly 20 years.
