Getting The Facts: The Affordable Care Act and You

Come learn about the new federal health care law changes and get free screenings for blood pressure, diabetes and other issues. 

Congressman Elijah Cummings and Maryland's secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene, Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, are scheduled to kick off an event to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act.

The event, sponsored by Baltimore HealthCare Access and Baltimore City Community College, will be held at the college's Liberty Campus Physical Education Center.

In addition to free screenings, free workshops will be held starting at 1:30 p.m. focusing on "how the new law affects the uninsured, seniors, and young adults," according to a press release about the event.

"A fourth session will focus on the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and how individuals can access these services in Baltimore," the release states.

Baltimore City residents who participate in the workshops will be eligible to enter into a drawing for free health coverage for a year through Kaiser Permanente's Bridge Program, "or payment for up to $500 in prescriptions for seniors with Medicare experiencing a gap in coverage for medications—the so-called "donut hole"—by Baltimore HealthCare Access," the press release states.
