Chesapeake City: A Day Trip Away from Charm City

Chesapeake City is a nice day trip from Baltimore.

Below the Elk and above the Bohemia Rivers, is a charming little town sitting on the north and side sides of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal - the major shipping route to and from the Port of Baltimore which saves many hours off the longer route from the mouth of the Chesapeake where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Visit the town on the south side where it looks like a little Georgetown aiming to please tourists and featuring the museum devoted to the ongoing story of the canal.

There's a Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Greenway Trail Access Map for cyclists/hikers.

In Rivers of the Eastern Shore author, Hulbert Footner, describes his decision as to where to end that volume, "I chose for my dividing line no river, but a man-made ditch, the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal; upon crossing it a traveler recognizes that he is leaving the real Eastern Shore."

You can get to Chesapeake City by taking Belair Road/Route 1 North across the Conowingo Dam to Rising Sun, then down Route 213 South. I-95 and Route 40 East also offer access across the Susquehanna River to Route 213 South. Or you can take the much longer route up 213 North through Chestertown after crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, going through Kent Island and picking up 301-North off of 50-East.

The Canal Museum was free the Friday I was there and well worth the visit!

The photos show the dominance of the bridge over the town and the quaint atmosphere.
