One of my joys in life is reading A.Word.A.Day begun by Anu Gorg for people all over the world who love words. Each weekday a new word is e-mailed subscribers. It is fun to read and free. There's a weekly theme. Words are described; their use illustrated. At each week's end the most interesting reader responses are circulated.

One week five very long German words were featured, including one of my favorites, Gotterdammerung. It is also the name of the fourth opera in Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle. In English , it's The Twilight of the Gods; preceded in order by The Rhine Gold, The Valkyrie and Siegfried.
Fifteen hours of beautiful dramatic music based upon Norse sagas make up the cycle of these four operas about the struggle for power and the redemption of love. That many hours could be taken to describe the characters and the plot.
The way I love to listen to "The Ring" is to wait for one of the four to be featured on the live radio broadcasts from The Metropolitan Opera in New York City on Saturday afternoons.
My home becomes an opera palace. Not knowing German and not having images to view, I can paint my own mental pictures and let the waves of music carry me away.
In a few photos I have tried imagining their color, mood and rich texture.
