I-83 Lane Closures Begin Friday

Traffic along Interstate 83 near Charles Village could get ugly.

The Baltimore Department of Transportation announced that it's closing the left lane on both the northbound and southbound sides of the highway near 29th Street.

The closures are being done so emergency repairs to collapsed drainage pipes can be repaired, according to the department’s website. The work is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday. Lane closures will continue for the next six to eight weeks until work is completed.

Repairs to the drainage pipes need to be done immediately because safety issues because of the undermining of the highway.

The department has suggested these alternate routes on its website:

• For motorists coming to or from Northwest Baltimore or northwest Baltimore County (including Pikesville, Reisterstown and Randallstown), the alternate routes are Liberty Road/Liberty Heights Avenue, Reisterstown Road and Park Heights Avenue.
• For motorists coming to or from North Baltimore City or County (including Towson, Timonium and Cockeysville), the alternate routes are Charles Street, York Road and Loch Raven Boulevard.
• For motorists coming to or from Northeast Baltimore City and County (including Parkville, Overlea and Perry Hall), the alternate routes are Hillen Road/Perring Parkway, Harford Road and Belair Road.
