Veterans Affairs,Where is the helping hand?

THE TREATMENT OF OUR SURVIVING VETERANS

I am no writer but I do need to release the ANGER! My dad is [WAS] a proud army veteran of the Korean War. He returned home in 1952 to NO fan fare, NO parade and NO assistance from anymore to start a normal life as the sounds  of war at the drive- in would find him on the floor under the dashboard of his car to find safety from incoming bombs and gun fire on the screen. He went on to marry my mom have four children and working his ass off at menial jobs for the next fifty years long side my mom just to make ends meets. In 2007 and never owning a new car or a home they were forced to move in with myself and my husband because both on social security only they were often forced to choose between food rent or meds. Then after 53 years of marriage he lost his wife. DEVASTATED, DEPRESSED and now trying to survive on only his own SS check, he reads an article in the sunpaper that many veterans do not know that the Dept. of Veteran Affairs was there to help them. So just weeks after losing his wife and having no financial or domestic or social skills (all things handled by wives of his generation) he drove himself down to Hopkins Plaza in Feb. 2008, where he tells me a very nice lady ask him a few questions and set him up with the help of $207.00 a month for the next for years. Now on the week of veterans day the VA sends him a letter telling him that not only will the checks stop, but they want all four years of money BACK. A total of $10,557.00 all at once or jump through goverment hoops to make payments. WHY THE HELL WOULD THIS PROUD MAN ASK FOR HELP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 53 YEARS IF IT WASN'T NEEDED, WHY WOULD THIS VERY NICE AGENT OF THE VA SET UP THIS HELP THAT THEIR NOW SAY HE WAS NEVER ENTITLED TOO! MY DADS RESPONSE TO THIS MESS, THEY ARE PUTTING ME THROUGH THE SAME HELL THEY PUT ME THROUGH SENDING ME TO KOREA 60 YEARS AGO! The only hope we have is a waiver of debt, legal documents with no money for a lawyer. HELP, yours truly, HEART BROKEN ARMY VETERAN
