Convicted Shooter Gets Life in Prison

A man, who was already serving 40 years in prison for trying to kill his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, was sentenced to life in prison Monday because the attempted murder violated his probation.

In May 2011, Terrence Kelly, 36, was on probation for two previous attempted murders in 1995 and 2005 when he shot Chico Sellers three times with a .40 caliber handgun in the 4400 block of Wrenwood Avenue in the Wilson Park neighborhood, according to a news release.

"As State’s Attorney, my primary focus is on the aggressive pursuit and prosecution of violent, repeat offenders. We can and will do everything in our power to remove them from our streets for substantial periods of time, as this case demonstrates," State’s Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein said in a news release.

Kelly pleaded guilty to the most recent attempted murder in September 2012 where he was sentenced to 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years. 

Kelly shot Sellers after fighting with Chinita Long, his ex-girlfriend, about visiting with his son. Following a telephone conversation where Long told Sellers not to come around the house he showed up, knocked on the door and  shot Sellers while he was standing in the doorway of the house.
