Sgt. Eric Kowalczyk, a police spokesman, said the chase started about 9:30 Monday night when an SUV was stopped in the 500 block of Alluvion Street, not far from M&T Bank Stadium.

After being stopped, the vehicle sped away and started a chase that involved the city police's helicopter unit and the Maryland State Police.

The pursuit weaved its way through the city, into Baltimore County and nearly to the state line before the SUV turned around and eventually headed back to the city.

Once back in the city, the SUV got onto Interstate 83, where the chase ended when the car stopped near the Ruxton Road exit. Kowalczyk said he didn’t know whether the SUV was forced to a stop or simply ran out of gas.

Police said the SUV driver’s identification and charges will be released later this afternoon.
