She said a co-worker discovered the man at about 2:30 p.m., after he did not show up at work. His apartment was ransacked, she said.

Kathy Henderson, who also lives on the block, said in a telephone interview she had never met the man before, but knew that he lived in the basement apartment of the house at the south end of the row of homes in the tree lined neighborhood.

"We're all shocked and saddened this has happened in our close knit community," Henderson said.

She recalled an incident on the block the evening of May 21 where the man was involved in a loud screaming match on the street, which caused neighbors to come out of their homes to see what the commotion was about.

Maj. Sabrina Tapp-Harper, the commander of the Northern District, said police have still not identified the victim, but confirmed there was a robbery reported to police on that day in the block.
