Northern District Commander Takes Better Waverly Murder 'Personally'

Major Ross Buzzuro, commander of the Baltimore Police Department's Northern District, said he's taking a murder in Better Waverly last weekend personally. 

However, he said he was confident police were closing in on the person responsible for the murder of 19-year-old Tanise Evans. 

Evans and two others were shot Saturday evening near the intersection of Gorsuch Avenue and Independence Street.

Buzzuro described Evans as a "bystander" and said she was shot in the back.

"Things look promising. We're receiving information from the public," Buzzuro said during the distrcit's Community Council meeting Wednesday.

Buzzuro said there had been no indication of any problems in that area before the shooting. He said that there was recently a report of gunshots in the area that had turned out to be fireworks.

Not all the news from the meeting was as dire.

Buzzuro during the meeting did report the district has seen a 28 percent drop in "major crime categories" compared to the same times last year.
