The number of homicides remaining flat and the increase in shootings actually go against citywide trends.

According to statistics released by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s office earlier this week, there were 27 fewer homicides in Baltimore in 2011 than in 2010. It is the lowest number of murders in the city since 1977.

Citywide there was also a 9 percent reduction in shootings from 2010.

The number of commercial armed robberies also jumped by 22 percent in the Northern District from the year before, but there was a 1 percent overall decrease in robberies in the district.

But there was some good news included in the total crime figures for the Northern District.

Burglaries, which tend to be a constant concern for residents in North Baltimore, were down by 7 percent.  Also larceny from auto experienced a sharp decline, dropping by 14 percent.  That, too, is at odds with citywide trends that saw property crimes increase by 4 percent.

The Northern District also deviated from city trends with an 8 percent decrease in total part one crime, whereas the city as a whole saw a 1 percent increase.
