Suspicious Substance Found at Offices of Rep. Elijah Cummings

The Baltimore City Fire Department hazardous materials team was called to the offices on Wednesday morning.

(UPDATE 4:37 p.m.)—The Baltimore Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was called Wednesday morning to the offices of Rep. Elijah Cummings because of a suspicious substance.

Ian Brennan, a spokesman for the department, said the team was sent to 1010 Park Ave. after the substance was discovered on the front door of the offices.

He said that the hazardous material team tested the substance, but that the FBI was now leading the investigation.

According to WBFF-TV, Cummings released a statement that the material found on the door was "putty-like," but that a Baltimore City police bomb technician determined it wasn't explosive in nature.

Special Agent Rich Wolf, a spokesman for the FBI, said the substance has been removed from the office doors, and that an investigation is on going.

"No hazards were discovered while we were [at the scene]," Wolf said.

He said there is not time frame to complete the investigation.

Cummings was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996, and his district spans from Baltimore to Howard County.
