Broken Pipe Causes Extensive Damage at Roosevelt Rec Center

The center in Hampden will be closed until further notice.

(UPDATED 5:08 p.m.)—The Roosevelt Recreation Center in Hampden is closed because of a broken pipe in the kitchen.

The center will remain closed until repairs are made to the “extensive damage” done by the broken pipe on Thursday, according to a news release from Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.

However, after-school programming will continue at Medfield Recreation Center and van service will be available to registered participants from Hampden Elementary School.

The recreation center was scheduled to host a Hampden Community Council meeting about parking issues in the neighborhood on Monday. It's unknown it that meeting will have to be rescheduled.

The center has been plagued by problems with shoddy work in the past.

A $1.3 million renovation of the century-old building completed in 2006, left residents upset because the heating and air conditioning did not work, electrical outlets were left uncovered and the roof was damaged.

In 2011, residents fought to save the center when it was one of 46 the city proposed finding a private partner to run. A private bid for the center was submitted but the city rejected it, and Roosevelt remained city run.
