City Announces Plans to Replace 12,000 Water Meters
About 12,000 automatic reading and billing water meters will be replaced in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
About 12,000 automatic reading and billing water meters will be replaced in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
The Baltimore City Department of Public Works made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon that it has started replacing the automatic readers with outside meters.
The current automatic readers were installed about 40 years ago as a pilot program and are now outdated. In some cases, the current readers can no longer provide remote readings, according to a news release announcing the change.

By removing the automatic readers, the city will stop issuing to those locations.
The Department of Public Works also announced it is issuing a request for proposal for an automated meter reading system that’s compatible with the new meters, according to the news release.

The city hopes that the changes will result in more “customer-friendly bills.”
