Comptroller Honors Tavern's Return

Comptroller Peter Franchot issued a proclamation to the Mt. Washington Tavern for its dedication to the community.

Comptroller Peter Franchot recognized the Mt. Washington Tavern’s effort to reopen its doors after a fire destroyed the restaurant in 2011.

Franchot awarded the popular bar and restaurant with a proclamation on Monday, not only for its owners tenacity in bringing the tavern back, but also for its support of the Mount Washington community, according Caron Brace, a spokeswoman.

"It's a landmark in the Mount Washington area. I don’t know anyone that lives in the area, or Baltimore, that doesn’t go to the Mt. Washington Tavern,” Brace said.

The fire did $2.5 million in damages, and destroyed nearly all of the tavern’s original structure. But even while firefighters were still fighting to extinguish the last of the flames, its owners were vowing to rebuild.

This fall, its owners made good on that pledge and the tavern reopened for business again in November.
