Cummings Endorses Rawlings-Blake

Congressman backs mayor's election campaign.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is hoping the endorsement of Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-District 7, will help convince voters to cast their ballots for her in the fall election.

Rawlings-Blake is seeking election in her own right to a term as mayor. After serving as City Council president since November 2007, she ascended to the position of mayor in February 2010 after former Mayor Sheila Dixon resigned as part of a plea deal.

So far, Rawlings-Blake faces challenges from Otis Rolley, Jody Landers and Frank Conaway Sr. in September's Democratic primary, which typically determines the general election winner in the predominantly Democratic city.

Cummings endorsed Rawlings-Blake at a campaign event at Mondawmin Mall on Thursday. He represents a district that includes most of Baltimore City and portions of Baltimore and Howard counties.

The congressman has represented the 7th District since 1996 and easily won reelection in 2010.

The last time Cummings endorsed a candidate seeking citywide office it didn't work out so well.

Cummings backed the reelection bid of former Baltimore City State's Attorney Patricia Jessamy. Gregg Bernstein wound up defeating Jessamy in the Democratic primary, the city's de facto election.
