Postal Clerk Pleads Guilty to Stealing Mail, Money

Windsor Mill woman faces five years in prison and supervised release for pocketing gift cards from greeting cards while she worked at a sorting machine.

Dorothy Jean Gibson, age 56, of Windsor Mill, MD, pleaded guilty Friday to theft of mail by a postal service employee.

Video that was part of the investigation shows her opening greeting card envelopes and putting mail, gift cards and cash into her handbag, according to a news release from the Maryland U.S. Attorney's Office.

She worked at the Linthicum Incoming Mail Facility, and faces five years in prison and supervised release.

Thieves are thieves regardless of employment. Just so happen she worked at the post office. To some degree that's wonderful because she commuted a federal crime. The crime will not be looked at lightly, it's a matter of trust.

I mailed a Ravens sweatshirt from Halethorpe to Frederick last year. It never arrived. When my husband and I tried to find out what happened to it, no one at the post office in halethorpe or at the main office downtown would tell us any thing about how far it had been tracked in the system or refund the postage we paid to mail it because, they said, we had not purchased insurance. We were not asking for them to pay us back for the value of the merchandise, just the $8.00 we paid in shipping. I don't understand why we would have to pay insurance to be reimbursed for shipping if they never deliver the package. Obviously they lost it or someone in the system stole it. If the $8.00 shipping I paid does not obligate them to actually deliver the package (or refund the shipping for services not rendered as agreed), then what the heck does that $8.00 actually buy me? Just their promise to MAYBE deliver it? If I am lucky? We were so angry at the way we were treated we switched to UPS for our eBay shipping.

Earlier in the comments Fredd made a point about how these comments are all about how the Postal Service ruined something for them and here is another example. However, once again, that's what this article is about. Word of mouth is a powerful thing, as well as experience and customer service. Enough people have complained about the postal service that sadly it's overshadowing the dedicated and caring employees working there. I have moved at least 90% of all my mailings to UPS, since they include free insurance up to a certain point and I have never had a problem from the excellent customer service in-store to the prompt and accurate delivery. People will always remember how you made them feel.
