Open Thread: Which Democrat Should Run for Governor?

The next gubernatorial election in 2014 could draw a crowded primary field.

Comptroller Peter Franchot, who was expected to run for governor in 2014, announced Tuesday he would not seek the post.

Franchot, whose criticism of Gov. Martin O’Malley lead many to believe he would run, instead announced he would seek to retain his current position.

But just because Franchot won’t run, doesn’t mean there won’t be a crowded primary field.

Other Democrats who may seek the office include: Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Del. Heather Mizeur, Attorney General Doug Gansler and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.

What Democrat would you like to see make a run for the state’s top office? Tell us in the comments why you would like to see that person campaign for the office.

He opted out because O'Malley,Busch, and Miller will destroy him because he pointed out O'Malley's reckless spending. They had a little heart to heart (which they removed from him) with him.

Those numbers are for Detroit only. What are Baltimore's comparable numbers? There is no comparison and it is a stupid premise.

Can we please have an intelligent conversation with polite dissent? Personal vituperative comment is not a reasoned argument. I'm don't know what's more discouraging, Maryland politics, or the state of our discourse.

Do you live in a cave. This state has abused us for years. O'Malley put a man in jail because he said he'd like to choke him, not I'm going to choke him. He's not only a poor Governor, he's a bully

First you denied the story all together. Then you ramble like a child.

I don't live in cave. I just don't like talking like a caveman.

The Governor didn't put the guy in jail. He put himself in jail by committing a crime. He had his day in court and a jury found him guilty. Then he appealed and was found guilty again. That's the way the system is supposed to work isn't it?

Isn't that like picking the smartest kid in special ed?

MMZ, MARY PAT CLARKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UGHHHHHHHHHHHH. That would be as bad as KKT. And not DUTCH either, he is too busy being an Afghan commando. How about somebody who hasn't sucked from the public trough for their entire adult life, someone with some business knowledge who would do something about creating private and not public jobs for Maryland, but silly me, after all this is dumb democratic Maryland.

I have thought long and hard about who should even be considered to run for governor and I'm at a total loss as Peter Franchot has decided not to run for the position. The Democratic party here in Maryland will be hard pressed in finding a viable candidate that will truly work for the good of the citizenry of Maryland that aren't outright liars or thieves. Too many of todays politicians are only interested in what will benefit them and not the people who put them in office.

This would be a great opening for the Republicans... if there was a Republican party in this state.

How about Ulman from Howard County. That way I won't have to make that tough decision about what I want to drink.

I would say Randy "Macho Man" Savage, but he has passed away. Perhaps either Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka or Hulk Hogan, if O'Malley can get them as Maryland residents. Why you ask? Under the policies of President Bush of sending kids off to war to face horrific injuries without paying for it and President Obama, whose policies have almost finished off the country, we are hanging by a thred. O'Malley has done his part to the working people in Maryland. He has applied many swinging neck breakers, suplexes, hit us with foreign objects, but has no finishing move. He can get Hogan or Snuka and tag out to them. Hogan drop the big boot on us or Snuka can climb to the top rope and hit us with the flying headbutt. The results will be the same, 1, 2, 3, its all over for the working people of Maryland.

not a dem but Steele should run
Wayne Monroe December 13, 2012 at 10:48 AM
The Democrat candidate, and of course the winner of the election, will be the candidate the Democrat machine selects. The likely candidate will be Lt. Governor Brown. He was selected as Lt. Governor because he was a presentable black man from PG county.
CB9678 December 13, 2012 at 12:21 PM
You sure and not because he was qualified for the job? Was that why Ehrlich picked Steele and not because he was qualified for the job? I think Brown is a good guy and I think Steele is too.

I'm wondering what MOM has on Peter Franchot? Did the state Dems give him a big payout? I'd have voted for Franchot
Steve December 13, 2012 at 02:01 PM
"I'm wondering what MOM has on Peter Franchot?" MOM isn't running . That makes absolutely no sense.
reader December 13, 2012 at 02:44 PM
Franchot was and still is a liberal, but after he became Comptroller he had a real chance to see how wasteful the ever taxing dems really are. I don't know why he decided not to run that was his choice. I do know that the citizens of Maryland will NOT be well served by whoever the dems put up because they are all only worried about party and what is good for it and not what is good for ALL citizens of Maryland.

Heather Mizeur, a voice for Progressives, and a brain for Maryland.
Barry Crane December 13, 2012 at 04:12 PM
I agree with reader.. I can count 3 people i trust in Maryland politics one being Franchot and and one radio host. Brown will be the next Gov so his strings can still be controlled by MOM.
Chuck Burton December 13, 2012 at 05:12 PM
Who? Never heard of the lady. Please tell more.
Sanchez December 13, 2012 at 06:34 PM
Not the one who was thrown out of the legislature for corruption right? The one who has that racist filled hate whitey radio program Larry Young?
MMZ December 13, 2012 at 11:08 PM
Puh-leeze, Steve. It doesn't matter whether MOM is running or not. Doesn't mean can't influence others.
reader December 13, 2012 at 11:46 PM
Understand something people, Maryland been just a waystation for MOM, something to fill his time while he dreams of that little white house 30 miles to the south. He has spent the last two years running around the country, getting face time on tv as president of the democrat governors assoc. or whatever, all for the purpose of gaining the holy grail, to be called MR. PRESIDENT. I'm sure somewhere he has hidden a mustle tee shirt that says "MR. PRESIDENT" and he sleeps with a doll dressed the same way. Except for taxing the hell out of the citizens of Maryland, similar to what his hero BOB wants to do at the national level, he has long left the best interest of Maryland citizens in the rear view mirror.

She advocated for Questions 4 & 6. She is against fracking in Maryland and supports offshore wind energy. She resides in Takoma Park, MD with her partner.
Penelope Patch December 19, 2012 at 06:17 AM
Reader, you are absolutely right and by the way, I have seen the work of MOM over the years, and I can't think of a time when he honestly had the best interest of Maryland citizens. Seems to me that MOM has always been interested in MOM. Maryland government is such a joke and if I could, I would move far away from this corrupt, greedy place.
night ninja December 20, 2012 at 04:23 PM
MOM is a scumbag and cares only about himself and not the citizens of this state. Honestly I do not have anything nice to say about this clown and would spit in his face if given the chance. Moved here from PA last yr and it was the worst decision I ever made...needless to say I'm looking to move back to PA soon. The citizens of this state who have been robbed of their hard earned money via ridiculous taxes from this f#ckface should drag him into the middle of downtown Annapolis and give him a well deserved beatdown...I know I'd be the first one to take a swing haha (I heard o'dipshit likes to fight people lol). Time to weed the garden in Annapolis...
