Roland Water Tower Bond Bill Approved

Residents have been pursuing state funds for the Roland Water Tower for years.

The Maryland General Assembly will approve a bond bill for $250,000 for the preservation of Roland Water Tower. 

The bill is included in the funds that can be allocated by the House of Delegates, Del. Samuel “Sandy” Rosenberg said.

Neighborhoods surrounding the historic tower have been working to have it preserved, and the area near the intersection of West University Parkway and Roland Avenue turned into a park. The neighborhoods have and the project has been awarded .

State funds from the bond bill cannot be used until the city and community spend $250,000 in matching funds.

Del. Shawn Z. Tarrant, who has worked for the past two sessions to approve the bond bill, said he was ecstatic the bond money will be approved because of the potential for the project.

“I passed the tower every day taking my kids to school for six years,” Tarrant said.

The water tower was built between 1904 and 1905 and has been out of services since 1930 when the city moved to a reservoir system.
