The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Baltimore-Washington area—including Harford, northern Baltimore, southern Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick—from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. A winter weather advisory means that snow-covered roads and limited visibilities may make travel difficult.

Travel conditions Friday evening through Saturday will be "hazardous," the National Weather Service reported.

The Maryland State Highway Administration urges drivers to stay off the roads on Saturday morning, adding that the storm could disrupt traffic along the Interstate 95 corridor.

Crews will likely have the roads mostly cleared by the afternoon. "If you must travel, allow extra time, take it slow, and remember: Never pass a snow plow or snow plow train. The safest place to be is behind the plows, which are clearing the roads ahead," the SHA stated in a release.

Drivers should try their best to move disabled vehicles onto the shoulder. They should also keep emergnecy survival kits, including the following, according to the SHA:

• a shovel
• jumper cables
• snacks
• blanket or sleeping bag
• flashlight with extra batteries
• high calorie non-perishable food
• first aid kit
• extra clothes
• bottled water
• a charged cell phone
• kitty litter or other abrasives
