State Awards $300,000 for Senator Theatre

The award is part of $1.4 million awarded in central Maryland as part of the Community Legacy Program Awards.

The state has awarded the Baltimore Development Corporation $300,000 for the rehabilitation and restoration of the Senator Theatre.

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development announced $1.4 million in Community Legacy Program Awards for projects in Central Maryland on Wednesday, according to a news release.

Last week the state announced the theater would be receiving $300,000 in historic tax credits to aid in the renovation of the theater.  In August the Baltimore Board of Estimates approved a $700,000 loan for capital improvements to the theatre.

James “Buzz” Cusack and his daughter Kathleen currently operate the theater and lease the building from the city.  They intend to add three new theatres and a wine bar to the art deco theater that was built in 1939.

Recently a group called Friends of the Senator launched an online petition urging better care of the theater’s facade.  At that time James “Buzz” Cusack said  the theater was in rough shape and that they were waiting for state funds to begin making improvements.
