Data Breach Reported at Johns Hopkins

Thousands of former students at the university were reportedly impacted.

The Social Security numbers of more than 2,100 former students from Johns Hopkins University were mistakenly released online, according to WBAL.

The breach occurred when someone reportedly stored the information on a machine, not realizing that it would be published on the internet.

Those affected included graduate students at the Homewood campus between 2007 and 2009.

The records were accessed a few dozen times, The Baltimore Sun reported, and while university officials said they did not believe anyone with malicious intent used the data, Johns Hopkins has offered free credit counseling and identity theft protection to those affected for the next year.
